AI-Powered Immigration Assistance with Pathfinder

Ana Ortega-Villegas

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing countless industries, and immigration law is no exception. One shining example of this transformation is Pathfinder, our AI tool powered by Gemini, is designed to empower immigration attorneys and non-profit legal service providers in their mission to serve immigrant communities better. By integrating cutting-edge technology with the human imperative of fair access to justice, Pathfinder exemplifies what it means to use innovation for societal good.

Pathfinder leverages artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to provide instant insights into immigration cases. It utilizes A-Numbers, unique identifiers assigned to non-citizens as part of their immigration process. For immigration attorneys, this translates into a faster, more thorough understanding of their clients’ situations.

Since launching in September 2024, Pathfinder is used thousands of times daily to ensure legal service providers are kept informed and prepared nationwide. Since the 2024 U.S. presidential election, our user base has doubled from 50 to 124 immigration organizations.

Pathfinder: A Data-Driven Analysis

Pathfinder offers real-time alerts about critical legal dates and case updates, reducing the uncertainty surrounding immigration proceedings and sudden case changes. Such an enhancement is convenient and can be crucial in preventing deportation due to missed hearings or deadlines.

According to our data, the in absentia removal rate for cases managed through Pathfinder is just 3.4%, far below the national average of 9%*. This significant disparity underscores the critical role of legal representation and the meaningful impact Pathfinder has on the outcomes of high-stakes immigration cases.

Another vital benefit Pathfinder provides is assisting immigration attorneys in broadening their outreach. Many immigration-focused non-profit organizations operate under considerable constraints, working with limited budgets and resources to serve a high volume of clients. Pathfinder addresses these challenges head-on by freeing up valuable attorney time and simplifying workflows.

A recent survey revealed that 76% of Pathfinder users felt the platform allowed them to serve more immigrants, fostering efficiency and scalability for legal teams. At the same time, 82% of Pathfinder users stated it effectively enhanced their understanding of their cases and facilitated clearer explanations to clients about their status and future steps.

Pathfinder: Partnering With USCIS

Mobile Pathways has always championed fair and equal access to justice for immigrants. Recognizing the deep connection between legal cases and employment status, we’re thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership with USCIS. By integrating their receipt data into Pathfinder, we’re working with our partners to create better employment opportunities for immigrants navigating the court system.

The Pathfinder platform has cultivated strong collaboration with organizations such as The California Access to Justice Commission, The GitLab Foundation, and Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG). Starting this week, we are excited to reveal how these relationships will transform the challenging journeys immigrants face in our adversial legal and employment systems.

In May, Mobile Pathways launched an enhanced Pathfinder to streamline employment authorizations for asylum seekers by combining instant alerts with advanced machine learning for asylum seekers.

As an asylum seeker himself, Estuardo fully understands that asylum seekers must wait long periods of time across various government agencies to get their Employment Authorization Documents (EAD). By determining methods to streamline this EAD process, our hypothesis is that our team will increase incomes and stability for underserved immigrants.

Estuardo Cifuentes, Program Manager at Lawyers for Good Government, is testing how Pathfinder helps asylum seekers improve incomes.
"Thanks to the GitLab Foundation and Open AI, we’re expanding work authorizations while restoring hope and dignity to thousands of people.”

Pathfinder’s primary goal is to improve how quickly employment authorization details can be retrieved from the USCIS Torch portal. By working closely with L4GG, Pathfinder is now equipped to support asylum seekers nationwide, streamlining work permit applications while providing crucial updates in real-time. More details of this technology and our joint project will be revealed at the GitLab Foundation and Open AI Demo Day on August 11th in San Francisco.

"Pathfinder has transformed the way we support asylum seekers. With so many people in limbo, having the ability to track cases in real time while coordinating with volunteers nationwide has been a game-changer."

Pathfinder is more than a tool; it represents a vision for the future of immigration assistance. Its intelligent use of AI addresses operational inefficiencies and ensures that some of society’s most vulnerable populations receive the legal support they need. * According to EOIR data (FY 2016–2023) the GAO verified that 9% of non-detained respondents with legal representation received in absentia removal orders. By comparison, only 3.4% of 5,000 cases tracked by Pathfinder resulted in absentia removal orders.
